Bill Summary: The No Bailouts for Sanctuary Cities Act, introduced by Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY), seeks to block federal funds from being used in jurisdictions with sanctuary city policies. Specifically, it would prohibit the use of federal dollars for shelter, food, transportation, healthcare, and legal services for undocumented immigrants in these areas.
Status: Referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary
Our Take:
Sanctuary cities choose to flout federal immigration law, yet when the consequences become unsustainable, they turn to Washington for a bailout. Since 2017, the cost of illegal immigration has totaled over $183 billion, with an estimated $9,000 per migrant annually coming out of the pockets of hardworking American taxpayers.
It’s not just wrong, but unfair that hardworking American citizens are footing the bill for those who broke our immigration laws.
The No Bailouts for Sanctuary Cities Act would put an end to this by cutting off taxpayer-funded support for cities that refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement.
Our tax dollars should be spent on making our nation safer, not more dangerous. This bill will force sanctuary cities to choose between following federal laws or addressing their migrant crisis on their own dime.
